Q & A
1. What is the March for California’s Future and why should I get involved?
Over $20 billion has been slashed from the state budget over the past two years. Residents are facing painful cuts in public education, public health services, public safety programs, and public infrastructure. We deserve better. All Californians should have safe and enriching schools, clean and secure streets, affordable health care, and decent jobs. That is why an unprecedented, broad coalition has come together, to demand a brighter future, and why you should join us.
2. Who is participating?
For a complete list of participating organizations, please see our coalition partners. If your organization would like to be added to list of supporters, please contact march@fight4CAFuture.com.
3. If I participate, do I have to march the whole time?
No – the march is 48 days long. We have a core group of marchers, but you can join anytime, including at our March 5 & April 21 rallies. It begins in Los Angeles and Bakersfield on March 5 and continues through the Central Valley, Fresno, Merced, and Madera, before arriving in Sacramento on April 20. For a complete list of towns, please see the route map here
4. I would like to march for a couple of days. How do I do that?
To be an episodic walker, just fill out the “I Am Marching” form at least seven days ahead of time with your available dates and email or fax it back. We will then contact you back and get you on your way!
5. How do I find out more about where the march is going to be and what’s happening on any particular day?
For a detailed schedule of where the walkers will be each day, please click here.
6. If I join the march, what do I need to bring?
For starters, good walking shoes! For a detailed list what to bring on the march (and what not to bring), please see the Walker Packing Checklist
7. I don’t think marching is for me. Can I still be involved?
Yes! There are many ways. You can host a party in your area to support the march, and have a live webcam feed of the marchers straight to your computer. You can also follow our blog, visit our Facebook page, and follow our Twitter account. You can also write letters to your state representatives urging their support for adequate funding of public services and public education. Last, you can donate to the march through our website.
8. What amenities will be provided for the marchers?
The walkers will be accompanied by a state-of-the-art motor-home “blogmobile” and two support vans. These vehicles have restrooms and showers and will hold luggage and food for the walkers. Overnight, walkers will be “roughing it” – staying in union halls and campgrounds, etc. Food and water will be provided by local unions along the way or carried in our vehicles.
9. What if I get tired or injured on the march?
We will have a motor-home and vans providing water, nourishment, and support for the walkers, as well as a nurse on hand in case you require medical attention. In addition, two law enforcement officers will be on hand to keep everyone safe.
10. How do I donate money to the march?
To donate, please go here. A $50 contribution will cover a walker’s basic needs for a full day.
11. Are there rallies or activities I can be part of along the way?
Yes! You can join our kick-off rallies in LA and/or Bakersfield on March 5 (bus travel provided), or the final rally in Sacramento on April 21. Plus, on March 10 in Allensworth, we’ll be celebrating American civil rights with a campfire/barbecue at this historical landmark, a black utopian town established in 1908. Then on March 18, in Dinuba, there’ll be a vigil to honor California labor leader Miguel Contreras. If you are interested in joining any of these or other activities, please contact us for detailed information.
