Close prisons, not schools

On Wednesday, we left the historic “40 Acre” compound, the original headquarters of the United Farmworkers Union. As we headed to a rally at Allensworth State Park we commemorated the “I AM A MAN” 1968 march of Black Americans which brought attention to the civil rights movement. We are carrying that torch today. Education and social services are a civil and indeed, a basic human right.

I find it ironic and sad to walk by miles of state prisons and correctional facilities as we look forward to joining our comrades from the NAACP and other organizations who represent the struggles of Black America. With one out of three black men behind bars in this country, schools closing and the prison industry being one of the “growth” industries in this country, I march stronger and harder to change the way we do business in California. I hope we can change our priorities and indeed this entire system that favors rich over poor, strong over weak, young over old and incarceration over education. We will not stop until there is justice for all!

Close prisons, not schools!
