How We Spent Our Time in Tulare...
Last Friday, we arrived in Tulare. We stayed at a RV park with full showers, laundry and internet access. Marchers spent the weekend catching up on e-mails, blogging, uploading photos and recuperating. On Saturday we drove to a couple of malls in downtown Tulare and handed out petitions for the ballot measure to overturn the 2/3 majority requirement for passing a budget. We had the opportunity to really engage with local residents. Miguel Contreras' brother even stopped by and told us he was looking forward to our arrival in Dinuba on Thursday.
On Sunday, we were hosted graciously by St. John's Baptist Church and then by Adam Urrutia, Head Organizer of SEIU Local 521 in Visalia who invited us over for a great BBQ. When we arrived he already had burgers and hot dogs burning, as well as an entire collection of oldies blaring from his ipod. We grilled late into the night, taking advantage of the extra hour of sunlight. Afterward, Adam invited us to go bowling, reasoning that a night of fun might sustain us as we continued our walk to Sacramento. We're definitely well-rested and ready for the days and weeks ahead!
