When We're Not Walking, Edition 1
People have been wondering what we've been doing during the downtime that we have after walking, or when we stay in a city for several days. We stayed in Fresno from Sunday night to Wednesday morning. On Monday night, we loaded up into UDW vans and drove to Cafe Info in Fresno where we were hosted by the Brown Berets. The organization has a long legacy of fighting for change in California, orchestrating the East Los Angeles walkouts of 1968 and leading the cry for better education.
We spent the evening talking to residents and community groups in the area including Carl Navarro, a senior at Fresno State and an aspiring rapper. "Bon Bon" Herd from Los Angeles, who walked with us for several days over the weekend, spoke passionately about the privilege and power of suffrage. Raul Romero, UDW Lead Organizer, and on staff for the march, added his own experiences as a Chicano Vietnam Veteran turned union organizer. Between "Bon Bon" and Raul, they have met the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez. I felt part of history.
