Rally in Modesto
Yesterday was packed with marches and rallies in Modesto. The core marchers convened at the Central Labor Council in Modesto where more than 100 UDW members were already waiting for us. They lead the march, with the help of local police, from the CLC to the Modesto City Supervisor's Building, where we had a mini-rally there. "We they say cutback we say fight back!" UDW members cried out. The proposed cuts could take away more than 500,000 jobs from in home support services alone. As the video shows, when we reached the Supervisor's Building in the middle of downtown, people took notice.
After that mini-rally, we continued on to Graceada Park where UDW had over 350 hot dogs and barbecued drumsticks waiting. While people were waiting on line, UDW encouraged its members to come out on the 21st.
George Sharp from the Disabilities Resource Agency spoke next, as well as Rick Salton and Doug Fleming of UFCW8.
Raelene Brown, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Stanislaus Tuolumne Counties Central Labor Council also spoke. She brought to light that the current cuts are not only hurting millions of working people, they're also fiscally counterproductive because they reduce overall consumer demand. In fact, "it is economically preferable to raise taxes on those with high incomes than to cut state expenditures during a recession. Steep state budget cuts will only worsen the economic downturn."
