Voices from the March (UDW)

In-Home support workers help the neediest of seniors with their daily lives. These elderly cannot afford the costly retirement homes that have become the staple of American senior citizenship. Because of the daily efforts of these workers, however, this group is cared for; they always have a warm meal, medical care and a clean household. So why is it that the governor and legislators want to drastically cut the wages for people who do such important work?

Yesterday was packed with marches and rallies in Modesto. The core marchers convened at the Central Labor Council in Modesto where more than 100 UDW members were already waiting for us. They lead the march, with the help of local police, from the CLC to the Modesto City Supervisor's Building, where we had a mini-rally there. "We they say cutback we say fight back!" UDW members cried out. The proposed cuts could take away more than 500,000 jobs from in home support services alone. As the video shows, when we reached the Supervisor's Building in the middle of downtown, people took notice.
